Bilingual preschool: Our method and inspiration

As a bilingual preschool, children are exposed to both Swedish-speaking and English-speaking educators throughout the day. By continuously listening to both Swedish and English, children quickly develop an understanding of both languages. We follow the "one educator, one language" approach, where each educator uses a specific language, creating a clear and consistent language environment for the children.

In line with the curriculum's goals, we support each child's mother tongue. Educators work with the children using simple greetings, counting rhymes, and songs in all the languages spoken within the group.

Our educators plan language-stimulating activities using methods such as the Bornholm Model and Jolly Phonics. We also incorporate a lot of singing and music. Additionally, we use TAKK (sign language as an alternative and complementary communication method).

We draw inspiration from both Reggio Emilia and Maria Montessori’s ideas. We believe that children have "a hundred languages" and that, at preschool, they should have the opportunity to express themselves in different ways through creation, play, and experimentation.

We use pedagogical documentation and regularly reflect together with the children. Our classrooms display clear documentation of the children's learning and our various projects.
